Riya’s Melodies: A Journey of Resilience and Joy
Riya’s journey shows that when we nurture a child’s passions, we unlock their voice, their joy, and their limitless potential.

When my daughter Riya was first diagnosed with autism at the age of three, I felt like the ground beneath my feet had disappeared. As a journalist, I had always relied on words to make sense of the world, but at that moment, I had none. All I could see was an uncertain future, filled with challenges I didn’t yet understand.

I still remember sitting in the doctor’s office, clutching my husband’s hand, as the word "autism" hung in the air. The doctor’s voice was calm and reassuring, but all I could think about was whether Riya would ever be able to express her needs, make friends, or lead an independent life. The uncertainty was overwhelming.

For weeks after the diagnosis, I found myself on an emotional rollercoaster. I was scared and grieving for the life I had imagined for her. But through the haze of those early days, Riya was my constant light. Her laughter—pure and infectious—broke through my fears, reminding me of the vibrant little girl who loved twirling to music and watching the sunlight dance through the windows.

One day, while I was sorting through old belongings, I stumbled upon a dusty CD of Indian classical music. Curious, I played it. Riya, who had been quietly lining up her toys, stopped what she was doing. Her face lit up as the sitar’s gentle strains filled the room. She ran to me, her small hands reaching out to pull me toward the speakers. For the first time in what felt like weeks, I saw her eyes sparkle with joy.

That moment was a turning point. I began incorporating music into her daily routine—soft ragas in the morning, playful beats in the afternoon, and soothing lullabies at night. It wasn’t just background noise; it became a bridge between us. When words felt out of reach, music was our shared language.

Over time, Riya’s love for music grew. She began humming along, her voice carrying the notes with a sweetness that brought tears to my eyes. With encouragement, she started attending a local music class for children. Initially, she was hesitant, clinging to me in the corner of the room. But gradually, the melodies coaxed her out of her shell.

Her music teacher, a kind and patient soul, recognized Riya’s unique connection to sound. He introduced her to the tanpura, an instrument with a rich, resonant tone. Watching her pluck the strings with delicate concentration was like witnessing a new layer of her personality unfold. It wasn’t just about learning music—it was about finding her voice in a way that felt authentic to her.

One evening, when she was eight, Riya performed a short piece at her music school’s recital. As she sat on the stage, her small hands poised over the tanpura, I held my breath. The room fell silent, and then the first notes filled the air. Her music was unhurried, deliberate, and utterly beautiful. I could see the audience captivated—not just by her skill but by the sheer joy radiating from her.

Tears streamed down my face as I realized how far she had come. The little girl who once struggled to express herself was now sharing a piece of her soul with the world. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride—not just in Riya but in our journey as a family. The fears and doubts that once consumed me had been replaced with hope and strength.

Today, Riya’s laughter and music fill our home. She’s my reminder that milestones aren’t about checking boxes or meeting timelines; they’re about celebrating every step forward, no matter how small. Riya has taught me to see the world through her unique lens, where beauty lies in simplicity and joy is found in unexpected places.

To any parent navigating this path: know that it’s okay to feel uncertain. It’s okay to grieve and to be afraid. But also know that there will be moments of light that make the journey worthwhile—moments like the first time your child smiles at you, the first time they find something that makes their eyes shine, or the first time they share their song with the world.

For me, Riya’s song is one of strength, resilience, and love. And I’ll forever be her biggest fan.
