My Journey From Overwhelm to Strength
Aarti Sharma’s journey with her autistic son Aarav transforms from fear to hope when art becomes their bridge of connection. A moving tale of resilience, love, and celebrating every small victory.

When I think back to the day we received Aarav’s autism diagnosis, it feels like a lifetime ago. I’m Aarti Sharma, a primary school teacher from Jaipur, and my 8-year-old son Aarav is my greatest teacher. But it wasn’t always this way. I want to share our story in the hope that it resonates with other parents navigating their own unique journeys.

Aarav was a bright and curious toddler, always lost in his world of colors and shapes. But as he grew older, we noticed he wasn’t hitting milestones like other children his age. Words came slowly, eye contact was fleeting, and he preferred solitary play over group activities. At first, I brushed it off, reassuring myself that every child develops at their own pace. But deep down, I knew we needed answers.

The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder was overwhelming. Words like “sensory challenges” and “communication delays” swirled in my head, leaving me anxious and unsure about what the future would hold. I remember sitting in the doctor’s office, clutching Aarav’s little hand, feeling a mixture of grief, confusion, and guilt. Was it something I did? Was I a bad mother for not noticing sooner? These questions haunted me in those early days.

But Aarav, in his quiet and unassuming way, showed me that a diagnosis is not a limitation—it’s an opportunity to understand and support him better. One evening, as I was cleaning up his room, I found a collection of his drawings tucked away in a corner. They weren’t just scribbles; they were intricate, colorful creations that told a story only Aarav could see. It was as if he was opening a window into his world, and I realized art was his language.

From that moment, everything changed. We enrolled Aarav in art therapy, and I watched him flourish. His once hesitant hands became confident, painting vibrant scenes that reflected his imagination and emotions. Through his art, Aarav found a way to express himself, and I found a way to connect with him. Every drawing he brought to me felt like a gift, a glimpse into his beautiful mind.

Parenting Aarav has taught me patience and resilience in ways I never imagined. Milestones that might seem small to others—like him saying “Mom” for the first time at age five or participating in a group activity at school—felt monumental to us. Each achievement is a testament to his determination and our collective effort as a family.

As a primary school teacher, I couldn’t ignore the gaps in understanding and support for children like Aarav in our education system. That’s why I started a local support group for parents in Jaipur. We meet monthly to share strategies, celebrate milestones, and most importantly, remind each other that we’re not alone. Aarav’s journey inspired me to advocate for inclusive education in our city, ensuring that every child, regardless of their abilities, feels valued and accepted in the classroom.

One of the most transformative moments in our journey was when Aarav’s school hosted an art exhibition. Aarav’s painting, a stunning depiction of a bustling Jaipur market, was displayed front and center. Watching him stand proudly beside his work, receiving applause and admiration, filled me with a sense of pride I can’t put into words. In that moment, I saw not just my son but a budding artist, a storyteller, and a child who had found his voice through creativity.

Today, I no longer see autism as something to overcome but as a unique part of who Aarav is. His perspective on the world is a gift that has enriched our lives in countless ways. I’ve learned to celebrate progress over perfection and to embrace the unexpected beauty in our journey.

To any parent reading this who may feel overwhelmed or uncertain, I want you to know that you are not alone. Your child’s path may look different, but it is no less meaningful or full of potential. Find what makes them shine, whether it’s art, music, or something else entirely, and nurture it. Surround yourself with a community that uplifts and supports you. And most importantly, remember to celebrate every step forward, no matter how small.

Aarav has taught me that strength isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about showing up, learning, and loving unconditionally. For that, I will forever be grateful.
