Embracing the Journey: Kunal’s Story of Strength and Imagination
Kunal’s story reminds us that true strength lies in embracing differences, nurturing passions, and celebrating the unique beauty of every journey.

When my son Kunal was three, we noticed he wasn’t reaching some developmental milestones like other kids his age. He loved spinning the wheels of his toy cars but never seemed interested in joining group games. His laughter would echo through the house, yet he often seemed lost in his own world. As first-time parents, my wife and I brushed off these signs, chalking them up to “kids being kids.”

But deep down, I sensed something was different.

After several doctor visits, evaluations, and a battery of tests, we heard the words that would change our lives forever: “Your son is on the autism spectrum.”

The news hit us like a tidal wave. I remember sitting in the doctor’s office, my mind swirling with questions. What would Kunal’s future look like? Would he ever make friends or live independently? Above all, I felt fear—fear of the unknown and of failing him as a father.

At first, I threw myself into research, reading everything I could about autism. But the more I read, the more overwhelmed I felt. The technical jargon and grim statistics painted a bleak picture. For weeks, I struggled with acceptance. I wanted to “fix” Kunal, to help him fit into a world that often doesn’t understand or accommodate differences.

One day, as I sat at my desk, frustrated with myself and the world, Kunal walked up to me holding a crumpled piece of paper. It was a story he’d drawn—scribbles of stick figures and animals with speech bubbles that didn’t quite make sense.

“Tell me the story,” I asked him.

His face lit up as he launched into a fantastical tale about a brave little boy who saved his village from a dragon using only his kindness and cleverness. I was mesmerized, not just by his imagination but by the way he told it—with enthusiasm, hand gestures, and a sparkle in his eyes.

That moment was a turning point for me. I realized Kunal didn’t need fixing—he needed understanding. His world might be different from ours, but it was no less beautiful. I vowed to stop focusing on what he couldn’t do and celebrate what he could.

Over the years, Kunal’s love for storytelling has grown. He spends hours creating comics, weaving characters and adventures that are as vibrant as he is. Through his stories, I’ve learned more about his perspective and his inner world. It’s a privilege to witness his creativity unfold.

Of course, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. There were meltdowns, awkward stares from strangers, and sleepless nights worrying about his future. But for every difficult moment, there were victories too—his first successful conversation with a peer, his excitement when he saw his comic displayed at a school event, and the day he told me, “Papa, I’m happy.”

Inspired by Kunal, I started a mentorship program for fathers of children with autism. Too often, dads feel sidelined or unsure of their role in their child’s development. I wanted to create a space where they could share their fears, joys, and strategies while learning to connect with their children on a deeper level.

Kunal has taught me to be more compassionate, patient, and hopeful. He’s shown me that life isn’t about conforming to a mold but embracing differences and celebrating progress, no matter how small.

Today, when I look at Kunal, I no longer see limitations—I see endless possibilities. His laughter, stories, and determination remind me that triumph isn’t about overcoming autism but about embracing the journey it takes us on.

I know there will still be hurdles ahead, but as long as we face them together, I’m confident we’ll emerge stronger. Because, like the hero in Kunal’s stories, he’s brave, kind, and unstoppable—and he inspires me to be the same.
