The Little Wins: Embracing Zoya's Journey
No Boiler Details Found

When I first heard the words "autism diagnosis" spoken about my daughter, Zoya, it felt like a cold wave had washed over me. I remember sitting in the doctor's office, trying to process the gravity of it. In that moment, I was filled with uncertainty—uncertainty about what the future would hold for Zoya, for our family. As a father, all I wanted was to protect her and ensure she had a happy life, but this diagnosis left me questioning everything.

Zoya’s path wasn’t going to be the one I had imagined. There would be no easy answers, no straightforward guide for navigating this new reality. There would be days of frustration, confusion, and longing for clarity. But what I didn’t know at that moment, sitting in that sterile doctor's office, was that this diagnosis would spark something powerful inside of me.

The initial days after the diagnosis were hard. There were moments when I would find myself staring at Zoya, trying to understand her in a way I hadn’t before. She was so full of life, so joyful in her own unique way, but at times, I struggled to find the right way to connect with her. I remember when she first became fascinated by storms—watching the way the weather would shift, the clouds darkening and the wind picking up. It was like she could feel the power of nature, and it fascinated her in a way that I couldn't fully grasp. But instead of feeling distant from her, I realized I needed to meet her in that place, in her world.

We started exploring together. We talked about rocks, volcanoes, and the wonders of the earth. I wasn’t just her father anymore—I was her companion in learning, her guide as we uncovered the mysteries of her favorite things. And in those moments, I realized that Zoya had a way of seeing the world that was unlike anyone else's. Her enthusiasm for even the smallest detail about weather or geology was contagious. She would explain the layers of rocks with a joy I’d never seen before, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe.

As the months went on, I started noticing the small, but significant, wins. Zoya's language was growing, her social skills were developing in her own time, and with each passing day, she made strides. But it wasn’t just the progress I saw in her that mattered—it was the change in me, as a parent, that truly made a difference.

Patience became my greatest strength. I learned to let go of expectations and embrace Zoya’s timeline. There were times when we encountered setbacks—times when things didn’t go as planned or when communication broke down. But instead of feeling defeated, I learned to celebrate those moments as part of our journey. Every day, I saw more of Zoya’s spirit shining through, and I felt proud of every little step she took.

One of the most rewarding experiences for me has been the opportunity to advocate for Zoya and other children like her. Collaborating with local mosques and schools to promote inclusion has been a life-changing experience. There’s a sense of purpose that I never knew I had until I started sharing Zoya’s story. We’ve connected with so many families, all of whom are on their own journeys, facing their own unique challenges. The most humbling part of this experience has been realizing that no one is alone.

Zoya is now 9, and every day is a new adventure. She still loves storms, rocks, and volcanoes, but she also loves music, dancing around the house, and making us laugh with her quirky sense of humor. It’s not always easy, but I have learned to appreciate every small victory. Each day that Zoya wakes up with a smile, each day that we share a new discovery, is a win.

To other parents who may be feeling lost or uncertain—know that the journey won’t always be easy, but the love you have for your child will guide you through. There’s no one-size-fits-all path, and every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory. You’re not alone, and your child’s potential is limitless. Just like Zoya, they have a way of seeing the world that is full of wonder, and it’s up to us to embrace it with open arms.

Our story is one of growth, of perseverance, and of finding strength in the little wins. And every day, I’m grateful for the journey we’re on, because it’s a journey that’s uniquely ours.
