Seeing the World Through Dev’s Lens: A Journey of Love and Acceptance
No Boiler Details Found

When Dev was three, I noticed the world didn’t seem to move for him the way it did for others. Words came slowly, and eye contact was fleeting. He seemed lost in a world of his own, captivated by the way sunlight filtered through the leaves or how a line of ants marched in perfect rhythm. As a mother, I knew every child was unique, but deep in my heart, I felt there was something more to understand about my son.

The autism diagnosis came as both a relief and a storm. Relief, because it gave a name to what we were experiencing and offered a starting point for support. But it also brought a flood of emotions—fear, confusion, and guilt. Had I missed the signs earlier? Was I doing enough? These questions lingered in my mind, creating a heavy cloud over my heart.

In those initial days, I felt lost, oscillating between moments of determination and utter helplessness. But Dev, in his quiet and persistent way, showed me the way forward. One day, as I sat beside him, he gently placed a picture book in my lap. It was a book about animals, full of vibrant colors and intricate details. His little finger traced the outline of a bird, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. It was a simple gesture, but it ignited a realization in me: Dev’s world wasn’t limited—it was just different. And it was my role to meet him there.

With every therapy session, every meltdown, and every breakthrough, I began to see my son for who he truly was—a boy with a boundless love for discovery. His fascination with books soon evolved into a love for photography. At first, it was just an old camera I gave him to play with. But soon, Dev was capturing the world with an eye for detail that left me speechless. A butterfly perched on a flower, a squirrel mid-leap, raindrops glistening on a windowpane—each photo told a story of the beauty he saw around him.

Dev’s passion for photography became our shared language. While words often failed us, his photos spoke volumes about his thoughts and feelings. They reflected a world of wonder, precision, and quiet strength. I realized that his unique way of seeing the world wasn’t a limitation—it was a gift.

Inspired by Dev, I decided to channel my energy into creating something meaningful. In Kochi, where we live, there was a noticeable gap in inclusive spaces for children like Dev. I started a sensory-friendly activity center, a place where children with special needs could learn, play, and express themselves without fear of judgment. The journey wasn’t easy—there were logistical hurdles, societal stigma, and moments of doubt. But every time I saw a child smile in our center, every time a parent shared how their child found joy in a space designed for them, I knew we were on the right path.

Dev continues to inspire me daily. His love for photography has taught me to slow down and appreciate life’s smaller details. His determination to communicate, whether through his photos or his growing vocabulary, reminds me that progress isn’t about ticking boxes—it’s about celebrating every step, no matter how small.

As parents, we often dream of shaping our children’s lives. But Dev has taught me that parenting is just as much about letting our children shape us. He’s opened my eyes to a world of patience, resilience, and unconditional love.

To every parent navigating a similar journey: it’s okay to feel overwhelmed, to have days when you’re unsure of the next step. But know this—your child has their own light, their own way of shining. And when you let go of expectations and meet them where they are, you’ll discover a world more beautiful than you ever imagined.

Dev’s photos now adorn the walls of our center, each one a reminder of how far we’ve come. Through his lens, I’ve learned to see not just the world, but life itself, in all its intricate beauty. And for that, I will forever be grateful.
