When Rohan was first diagnosed with autism, I felt as if the world had shifted beneath my feet. The uncertainty, the fear of the unknown—it was overwhelming. As a parent, you always want to protect your child, and when faced with something like this, it's easy to feel helpless. The questions piled up: What does this mean for him? For us? How do we move forward?

I remember the moment when the diagnosis was confirmed. I looked at my son, who was then just a little boy of around six, and I saw his smile, his twinkling eyes, his intense focus on the world around him. And in that moment, I realized something profound: Rohan hadn’t changed. He was still my son, the boy who loved puzzles and cartoons, who could get lost in the intricate details of a jigsaw for hours. What had changed was my understanding of him.

At first, the road ahead seemed daunting. We sought help, tried different therapies, and navigated through a maze of specialists, but what we lacked was acceptance. I had to unlearn many of the things I thought I knew about how children “should” behave. I had to stop comparing Rohan to other kids and start focusing on his strengths, his unique ways of interacting with the world. I realized that autism wasn’t a wall we had to break down, but a different way of thinking, feeling, and experiencing the world.

One of the first breakthroughs came when Rohan solved his first 500-piece jigsaw puzzle on his own. Watching him carefully piece together the image, his concentration unwavering, filled me with awe. This moment became a symbol for me—Rohan was piecing together his world in a way that made sense to him, one small, deliberate step at a time. And I realized that, just like with a puzzle, each day was an opportunity to find a new piece of understanding, a new approach to communicate, to bond, to grow together.

That spark of understanding led to something beautiful: the creation of a startup that develops educational tools for neurodiverse kids. Inspired by Rohan’s love for puzzles and logic games, we began to build products that embraced how kids like him learn and interact. It felt like a mission, not just for our family, but for all neurodiverse children. Through this work, I learned that autism doesn’t limit potential; it reveals a different way to approach problems and ideas.

Rohan may not always communicate in ways that are expected, but when he giggles at his favorite cartoons or proudly shows me a completed Sudoku puzzle, it’s clear that he is thriving in his own way. And that’s been one of the most important lessons of all: that every child, no matter how they learn or express themselves, deserves to be celebrated.

The journey wasn’t easy, and it still isn’t. There are days when I feel like we’re facing another mountain to climb. But in these moments, I remind myself of how far we’ve come. Rohan is constantly teaching me to see the world through a different lens—one where strength lies in perseverance, and success is measured in small, daily victories. Each puzzle he solves, each breakthrough he makes, is a reminder that we’re on the right path.

Today, as I watch Rohan concentrate on his latest puzzle, I’m filled with pride. The diagnosis, though initially a heavy weight, has become a catalyst for growth and understanding. It’s given me the chance to embrace Rohan’s uniqueness and to build something meaningful that will help others like him. And in this process, I’ve found strength I didn’t know I had.

This is the essence of what I’ve learned: autism is not a limitation. It’s an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to celebrate the incredible journey of a child who sees the world in their own beautiful way.
