From Struggles to Strength: Building Bridges for Devika and Beyond

As a teacher, I thought I understood children—their unique quirks, their boundless energy, and their limitless potential. But nothing prepared me for the journey of parenting my daughter, Devika. Seven years ago, she came into my world like a ray of sunshine, full of wonder and curiosity. Her giggles were infectious, her love for the ocean uncontainable, and her fascination with animals awe-inspiring. But as she grew, her differences became more pronounced, and our journey took an unexpected turn.

When Devika was diagnosed with autism at the age of three, my world momentarily crumbled. Like many parents, I cycled through feelings of confusion, guilt, and fear. Was I doing enough for her? Would she find her place in the world? Questions swirled in my mind as I tried to navigate the unfamiliar territory of special needs parenting. Living in Thiruvananthapuram, I soon realized how limited resources for children like Devika were. It wasn’t just our family’s journey that felt daunting—it was knowing that other parents faced the same struggles with even fewer answers.

But Devika taught me something profound. Watching her light up at the sight of a squirrel darting up a tree or her delighted squeals as waves tickled her toes, I realized she wasn’t asking for the world to change overnight. She just needed a little understanding, patience, and the space to flourish in her own way. That’s when my perspective shifted. I stopped focusing on what Devika couldn’t do and started celebrating all the incredible things she could.

Still, the challenges remained. Schools weren’t equipped to handle children with diverse needs, and many parents felt isolated, unsure of where to turn. One sleepless night, after poring over articles and research, I asked myself a question that would change everything: If the resources don’t exist, why can’t we create them?

That question sparked the beginning of our community’s transformation. I started small, reaching out to other parents of children with autism. We formed a support group, sharing experiences, tears, and, most importantly, hope. Every parent brought something unique to the table, whether it was advice, stories of small victories, or just a comforting presence. Together, we became a lifeline for one another.

But I knew we could do more. Drawing from my background as a teacher, I collaborated with local schools to introduce training sessions for educators on inclusive teaching strategies. I shared what I had learned from parenting Devika, emphasizing that every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and included. Watching teachers embrace these ideas and implement them in their classrooms filled me with hope. Slowly but surely, the seeds of inclusion began to take root.

Devika’s joy became my guiding star throughout this journey. Her love for animals opened up new avenues for connection. I started organizing trips to zoos and wildlife sanctuaries for families like ours. Watching the children’s faces light up as they observed elephants or listened to birdsong was a reminder of the beauty in shared experiences. These outings not only enriched our children’s lives but also fostered a sense of community and belonging.

Today, when I see Devika running along the beach, her laughter blending with the crashing waves, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Our journey hasn’t been without its hurdles, but it’s brought us strength we never knew we had. Devika’s differences aren’t barriers; they’re bridges—connecting us to a more compassionate and inclusive world.
