Diya’s Symphony: Celebrating Courage, Growth, and the Power of Music
True progress blossoms when we embrace each child’s unique journey, celebrating every step forward with patience, understanding, and unwavering belief in their potential.

When my daughter, Diya, was diagnosed with autism at the age of three, it felt like stepping into a world I knew nothing about. As a software engineer, I’m used to solving complex problems with logic and code, but parenting Diya showed me that love, patience, and creativity were the most essential tools I needed to learn.

I’ll be honest—the early days after her diagnosis were tough. My wife and I were overwhelmed with questions: What did autism mean for her future? How could we help her navigate a world that often feels too loud and chaotic? Would she ever find her voice in a way that others could understand? I spent countless nights researching and poring over articles, trying to make sense of the jargon and advice. Despite the uncertainty, one thing was clear: Diya was the same bright-eyed, curious little girl she had always been. Autism wasn’t something to “fix”—it was a part of who she was.

Diya’s love for classical music began almost by accident. One evening, during a particularly challenging meltdown, I played a recording of a soothing Carnatic composition to calm my own nerves. To my surprise, the music worked wonders for her too. She stopped crying, her little hands tapping along to the rhythm. From that day on, music became her sanctuary and, in many ways, ours too. We enrolled her in music therapy sessions and noticed how she would light up whenever she recognized a melody. Her focus and confidence blossomed as she hummed and experimented with simple tunes. Music became her language when words failed, a bridge to connect with the world around her.

One of the most profound milestone moments happened at her school’s annual day program. Diya had been practicing a simple classical piece for weeks. While we were proud of her progress, we were also nervous. Would the lights and noise overwhelm her? Would she freeze on stage? As the event approached, I found myself oscillating between hope and doubt. But Diya, in her quiet determination, taught me a lesson that night.

When her turn came, she walked onto the stage, clutching her little tambura. I could see her scanning the crowd, her hands trembling slightly. But then, she closed her eyes and began to play. The hall fell silent as the first notes filled the air. It wasn’t just her skill that moved everyone; it was her courage. Here was my little girl, standing in front of a crowd, sharing her world through music. By the time she finished, I was in tears, and so was half the audience. The applause was thunderous, but more importantly, Diya’s smile said it all. She had found her way to shine.

That night marked a turning point for me as a parent. I realized that milestones aren’t just about achieving something society deems “normal”—they’re about finding joy and pride in every step forward, no matter how small. Diya’s journey has taught me to redefine success, not as a destination but as a series of moments that celebrate growth, resilience, and love.

Inspired by her determination, I started volunteering with local communities in Kochi to create sensory-friendly public spaces. It’s a small way to ensure that children like Diya can explore and enjoy the world without fear or discomfort. Balancing my tech career and advocacy work isn’t easy, but every time I see Diya thrive, it feels worth it. She has taught me that struggles aren’t roadblocks; they’re opportunities to grow alongside her.

Today, as I watch Diya hum along to a new raga or confidently step into spaces that once overwhelmed her, I’m filled with gratitude. Autism has reshaped our lives, not as a limitation but as a journey of discovery and strength. And for every parent navigating similar paths, I want you to know: the road may be uncertain, but it’s also filled with unexpected beauty. Just like Diya’s music, it’s a melody that grows richer with time, one note at a time.
